How can we teach students today to understand films and audiovisual media? How can we guide them from passive viewing toward a conscious and critical appreciation of audiovisual culture? Which film education teaching methods are effective and efficient in actual school settings?
The international project Audiovisual Connect LAB (AC LAB), which runs from January 2026 to December 2027 under the leadership of the KRUTÓN association, seeks answers to precisely these questions. The project integrates research, film education, and audience engagement across Europe, bringing together educators, film professionals, and researchers in eight European countries. It includes a broader research component that, for the first time ever, aims to systematically examine and define film literacy among high school students in a European context.
Nearly 80 Czech high school teachers and instructors are currently involved in the project. Following the highly successful first phase of the program, we are once again opening registration to participants from regions outside Prague due to high demand.
Who are we looking for?
High school teachers and lecturers of various subjects (ranging from art, literature, and languages to history and the natural sciences) who work with young people aged 15–19, and would like to participate in four meetings over the course of two years at Kino Kavalírka to explore together how to incorporate film into their teaching – whether they already have experience with film education and want to further their professional development in this area, or are just looking for a way to get started.
What can you expect?
You’ll become part of a group of teachers participating in a series of four mandatory, thematically focused meetings – Learning Innovation Circles (LIC) – in the cozy setting of Kino Kavalírka.
Why get involved?
Film and audiovisual media are among the most important languages of everyday life. Students encounter them every day, yet schools often lack the tools to work with them systematically.
This project is an opportunity to explore new approaches to film education together and to become part of a community of teachers who want to teach students to view film differently, understand the language of audiovisual media, and thereby increase their resilience against media and audiovisual manipulation.
UPCOMING DATES IN 2026:
September 12, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
September 26, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Two additional meetings will take place in the first half of 2027.
During the session, you will:
- Discover short European films and work with them as teaching materials
- Experience film-based educational activities so that they can be adapted for use in your classes with students
- Analyze them from a pedagogical perspective
- Adapt them so they work in your classroom and within the subjects you teach
- Share experiences with other educators who share similar interests
- Complete a short questionnaire on film literacy and viewing habits
- Participate in two semi-structured interviews with researchers at the beginning and end of the project
Between meetings, you’ll have the opportunity to try out the activities with your students and bring your experiences back to the group discussion.
The meetings will be practical, interactive, and focused on sharing experiences, experimenting, and collaboratively exploring ways to work with film and incorporate film education into your teaching. Each meeting will take 6–8 hours.
What will you gain from participating?
- Inspiration and specific methodics for incorporating film into your teaching, tailored to the subjects you teach
- Networking and the opportunity to exchange experiences with colleagues who want to actively use film in school or are already doing so
- The chance to participate in an international project taking place in 8 European countries
- Certificate of completion for the program as part of an EU-supported project
- Free movie tickets and a transportation subsidy to Prague
PARTICIPATION IN THE PROJECT IS FREE. To ensure we obtain representative data from the research, we need you to attend all 4 meetings.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the research coordinator, Adéla Lachoutová, at edukace@krutonfilm.cz.
